The effect of the length of the combustion section on the thermal characteristics of the flare in furnaces with different burner configurations is discussed. The relationships of the length of the combustion section to the heat flux in the direction of the burner ports and, therefore, to the reliability of the latter and the rate of nitrogen oxide formation are discussed. The length of the combustion section can be increased in boilers with different burner layouts in order to lower the concentration of nitrogen oxides and enhance burner reliability. © 2010 Springer Science+Business Media, Inc.
