With declining reserves of rich iron ores, the processing of lean and complex ore is a priority. Such ore may only be used in the blast furnace in limited quantities. A method is developed for the selective reduction and extraction of metals from the oxide lattice in lean and complex ores, without melting. The transfer of charge and mass through lattice defects is analyzed. The reduction of cations is found to involve the addition of electrons associated with anionic vacancies. Vacancies and excess electrons are formed when oxygen anions are removed from the lattice by chemical reaction with the reducing agent. © 2013 Allerton Press, Inc.
